In the line of duty, police officers face a multitude of dangers every day. From volatile situations to potential physical altercations, their job demands constant vigilance and preparedness. Yet, amidst the challenges they encounter, one critical aspect often overlooked is the lack of sufficient personal protection equipment (PPE), especially concerning hand protection when dealing with knife attacks.

The horrendous recent case of the unprovoked attack on a young boy on his way to school in Hainault, the Police response and an Officer receiving serious damage to her hands is a case in point. Not one of the 3 officers who eventually caught the attacker had hand protection and one of those officers received life changing injuries to her hand.

Knife crime is becoming a growing concern in many parts of the world. Yet despite this education about anti-cut blade resistant clothing which can help keep people safe has been virtually non-existent. The UK, as an example, has seen a significant rise in such incidents over the past few years. According to official government statistics, there were over 44,000 offences involving knives in England and Wales in 2019.

Just when it seemed that everything was settling down and we had peace on most of Planet Earth up pop the Russians to start looking like they could be invading Ukraine.

A rapid gearing up of stocks is required by many news companies who have been caught out at a time when freight costs are making it so expensive to ship goods around the world.

After a year of the country being in and out of lockdown there seems to be a beacon of light on the horizon.

Like so many other service industries security companies have been hit hard with security personnel not needed to keep pubs, clubs and shopping centres secure.

But now things seem to be changing. People are back out on the streets shopping, eating in outdoor restaurants and drinking in pub gardens. And wouldn’t you know it. All of a sudden we seem to be reading about more knife crime.

One of Bladerunner’s very early products, going back some 15 years, were the Rhino Duty puncture resistant gloves, one of our bestselling items in the early years, due to their strength, durability and versatility, as well as their high level cut and puncture resistance.

Over the years we have developed new and unique protective gloves using a variety of materials, including DuPont™ and Kevlar®, Dyneema and Bladenoma®, each with their own properties and benefits to the end user.

The Fortis for example was specifically designed to be lightweight and supersoft, using Aniline leather, but doesn't have the same levels of cut and puncture resistance as the Rhino.

Our Coyote gloves were designed to offer warmth and the highest level of protection, using our trademarked Bladenoma® anti-slash fibre, maximising finger flexibility and including an added layer of Kevlar on the exterior for double protection. Our Police & Security gloves even come with touchscreen enabled finger tips.

Even with our continuous research and development, and release of new dynamic cut resistant gloves, the popularity of the Rhino glove hasn't ceased, but with the demand of our other products being so high, we only stocked limited sizes of the Rhino.

The Gardeners Glove of Choice

All of a sudden early last year we got a telephone call from a landscape gardening company whose staff were constantly damaging their hands whilst pruning Roses and other thorny vegetation. As we carried very few sizes in our Rhino anti-slash puncture resistant gloves range we put a special order through to our factory and we made up a special batch for the landscaping company and guess what! They loved them.

Suddenly we have discovered a whole new market for our Rhino gloves. Since then we have sold masses of them. We now have them in stock in all sizes, from Small through to 4XL.

Rhino gloves are our very toughest units designed to take on the jobs that other gloves would just not be able to cope with. They are used by everyone from Police through to train cleaning staff who never know what they may be picking up when they have to collect rubbish or scour the ground for evidence. Now they have been joined by the gardening community.

Not only are these gloves puncture resistant they are also blade-cut resistant which is essential if you are working with knives, sharp gardening tools or your hands are likely to come into contact with broken glass or anything else that may be damaging to your hands.

Rhino gloves are manufactured from a mix of leather, Neoprene and Dupont Kevlar. The gloves come with a wide Velcro wrist strap and they are aerated to help keep your hands cool.

Rhino Duty Glove in Numbers

As with all of our gloves they have been tested by a recognised UK test laboratory to standard EN388: 2003 and the tests were incredibly impressive:

Puncture resistance - method 6.4:	Level 4
Tear resistance - method 6.3	Level 4
Blade cut resistance - method 6.2	Level 5
Abrasion resistance - method 6.1	Level 4

Bearing in mind the highest level achievable under this test is level 5 you can see how impressive the test results were.

Investing in a pair of Rhino gloves is a small price to pay to protect your hands from all the dangers that the world can throw at them.

The “Police” glove.

As if it's not bad enough having to read about the number of innocent people being injured, or even murdered, by knife attacks we are seeing a situation where our brave Police, yes those on the front line who protect the public, are often confronting criminals armed with knives, with their bare hands.

Yes, we read the figures of how many people are murdered, how many are injured but who reads the statistics for how many are saved from injury by the intervention of our brave Police men and women. Surely it is only right that we give them the right protective equipment to disarm knife wielders in as safe a way as possible. We know that the Police wear anti-stab vests which will protect them if they are stabbed but how are they expected to dis-arm someone carrying a knife without suffering horrible damage to their hands.
